How to Rank in ChatGPT: A Step-by-Step Guide for D2C Brands

Sep 28, 2026 · 9 min read · By the Yogreet Team

To rank in ChatGPT, you have to win on two paths. The search path is ChatGPT looking at the web live, so you need OAI-SearchBot allowed, pages that answer buyer questions directly, and third-party pages that name you. The training path is what the model already "knows", and you shape it slowly by being mentioned consistently across the open web over months.

There is no "position 1" in ChatGPT and nobody can guarantee a spot. But you can raise the odds that your brand gets named when a buyer asks "best protein bar without added sugar in India". This guide shows how to rank in ChatGPT one step at a time, starting with what you can fix this week.

What does "ranking" in ChatGPT actually mean?

On Google you rank for a keyword. In ChatGPT, you get mentioned (your brand name appears in the answer), cited (a link to your page or a page about you appears as a source), or shown (your product appears in a shopping-style result). These are three different wins, and they come from different places.

It also helps to know that answers vary. The same prompt, asked by two people, or by the same person a week apart, can name different brands. So think in terms of share: out of 20 buyer questions in your category, how many answers mention you? That is the number you are trying to move.

Where do ChatGPT's brand recommendations come from?

Every answer draws on one or both of two sources.

Search path Training path
What it is ChatGPT searches the web while answering What the model learned before it was released
Which OpenAI crawler OAI-SearchBot GPTBot
When it's used Questions about products, prices, "best X", anything recent General knowledge, or when ChatGPT doesn't search
Shows links? Yes, as cited sources No
How fast your changes show Days to weeks Months, only when a new model is trained
How much you control A fair amount Very little directly

OpenAI's crawler documentation is clear on the split. OAI-SearchBot is used "to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features". GPTBot is used "to crawl content that may be used in training our generative AI foundation models". You control them separately in robots.txt.

For a D2C brand, the search path matters most. Buying questions ("which sunscreen for oily skin under ₹500", "is this brand legit") tend to trigger a web search, because the answer depends on current products and prices. The training path matters more for the background impression ChatGPT has of your category and brand name.

If you're not sure whether you're missing today, read why your brand doesn't show up on ChatGPT first. This post is the step-by-step fix.

How to rank in ChatGPT: the step-by-step plan

Do these in order. The early steps are cheap and nothing after them works if they fail.

Step 1: Write your prompt list before changing anything

Sit down with your support team and write 20–30 questions a real buyer would type. Mix three types:

  • Category questions: "best whey protein for beginners in India", "sulphate-free shampoo for curly hair"
  • Problem questions: "what to eat at 4pm when I'm hungry at work", "why is my skin oily after moisturiser"
  • Brand questions: "is [your brand] good", "[your brand] vs [competitor]"

Run each one in ChatGPT, logged out or in a fresh temporary chat, and record the result. This is your baseline. Without it, you won't know in three months whether anything you did worked.

A simple tracking sheet:

Prompt Mentioned? Cited (link)? Competitors named Sources ChatGPT cited
best sugar-free protein bar India No No Brand A, Brand B a listicle site, a Reddit thread
is [your brand] protein bar healthy Yes No none Amazon listing

The last column is the most useful one. It tells you which websites ChatGPT trusts for your category. Those are the places you need to appear.

Step 2: Let OAI-SearchBot in

If OAI-SearchBot can't reach your site, you can't be cited from it on the search path. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they may still appear as plain navigational links. It also says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to be picked up.

The minimum ChatGPT section of your robots.txt:

# ChatGPT search: allow so you can be cited
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

# OpenAI model training: your choice (see Step 6)
User-agent: GPTBot
Allow: /

Then check the layers above robots.txt. Cloudflare's bot settings, Shopify apps and WordPress security plugins can block AI crawlers even when robots.txt says allow. This is the most common silent failure we see.

A note on ChatGPT-User: OpenAI says this agent handles actions a user starts, like asking ChatGPT to open a specific page, and that robots.txt rules may not apply to it. It isn't how you get into search results, so don't worry about it for ranking.

Step 3: Build pages that answer the prompts on your list

ChatGPT's search path works like a fast researcher. It searches, reads a handful of pages, and quotes the parts that answer the question cleanly. So, for each cluster of prompts from Step 1, you want one page on your site that answers it better than anything else.

For a skincare brand, that might mean:

  • A buying guide: "How to choose a sunscreen for oily Indian skin"
  • An honest comparison: "Gel vs cream sunscreen: which suits humid weather?"
  • A product page that states the facts plainly: SPF and PA rating, key ingredients with percentages, pack size, price, who it's for and who it isn't for

Write each page so a single paragraph could be lifted and still make sense. Open with the answer. Use headings phrased as questions. Put numbers on the page, not in images. Add a short FAQ to product pages with the questions your WhatsApp support actually gets.

Keep your core facts identical everywhere: website, Amazon, Flipkart, Nykaa, Blinkit, Instagram bio. If your site says "22g protein" and your Amazon listing says "20g", you've given ChatGPT a reason to trust neither.

Step 4: Get named on the pages ChatGPT already cites

This is the step most brands skip, and it's usually the one that decides whether you get recommended.

When ChatGPT answers "best protein bar in India", it often leans on third-party pages: "best of" articles, comparison sites, Reddit threads, YouTube reviews, marketplace listings. Your own site saying you're the best is a weak signal. Three independent sites saying it is a strong one.

Go back to the "sources ChatGPT cited" column from Step 1. For each source that appears more than once:

  • Listicles and review sites: pitch the writer. Send samples, a one-page fact sheet and a clear reason you belong in the list. Ask to be added in the next update.
  • Reddit and Quora threads: answer genuinely, say who you are, and don't post links in every reply. Spam gets removed and remembered.
  • YouTube: work with creators who do honest reviews. Transcripts are text that search can read.
  • Marketplaces: push for detailed reviews that name a use case ("keeps me full till lunch"), not just five stars.

Expect this to take months. It's also the work that keeps paying off, because the same mentions feed the training path later.

Step 5: Get your products into ChatGPT shopping

ChatGPT now shows products in shopping-style results, and OpenAI has built a way for merchants to send product data directly. Its commerce getting-started guide says onboarding product feeds "is currently available to approved partners", with an application form on the ChatGPT merchants page.

The product feed spec asks for nine required fields: item ID, title, description, URL, brand, seller name, image URL, availability and price. It accepts formats such as CSV, TSV and JSONL, including Google-compatible feeds.

The honest caveat for Indian brands: the spec says this feed format targets the US market by default, and other countries need separate confirmation from OpenAI. So apply if you sell internationally or want to be early, but don't pause everything else waiting for it. If you already maintain a clean Google Merchant Center feed, you're most of the way to a ChatGPT one.

Step 6: Decide what to do about the training path

You can't submit your brand to ChatGPT's training data. What you can do:

  1. Decide on GPTBot. Allowing it lets OpenAI use your public pages for training future models. Blocking it keeps your content out, but doesn't stop other sites that mention you from being used. For most D2C brands that want to be known, allowing it is the sensible default. Brands that sell original content (recipes, courses, research) may reasonably choose otherwise.
  2. Be described the same way everywhere. Models learn associations from repeated patterns. If your brand appears again and again next to the same phrase ("a clean-label protein bar brand from Pune"), that association has a better chance of sticking than scattered, inconsistent descriptions.
  3. Play the long game. Training updates come in big, infrequent batches when OpenAI releases new models. Anything you do this month may take a long time to show up here, and no one outside OpenAI knows exactly how that data is weighted. That's why Steps 2–5 come first.

Step 7: Re-run your prompt list every month

Same prompts, same method, once a month. Track three numbers: how many prompts mention you, how many cite a page about you, and which competitors keep appearing. Also look for chatgpt.com as a referrer in your analytics, and note which pages people land on. If they're landing on a slow product page and bouncing, the next fix is conversion, not visibility.

Can you pay to rank in ChatGPT?

Not in the answers themselves. ChatGPT now carries ads for some users, including in India, but OpenAI's stated principle, quoted in Simon Willison's write-up of the announcement, is that "Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you" and that ads "are always separate and clearly labeled".

So ads are a separate channel, like Google Ads next to organic results. They can be worth testing for launches or offers, but they don't make ChatGPT recommend you in the answer. Be wary of anyone selling a "guaranteed ChatGPT ranking" service.

A 30-day plan for a small team

Week What to do Time needed
1 Write 20–30 prompts, run them, fill in the baseline sheet 3–4 hours
1 Check robots.txt and CDN/firewall for OAI-SearchBot; fix blocks 1 hour
2 Align product facts across site and marketplaces 3–5 hours
2–3 Write or rewrite 3–5 answer pages for your biggest prompt clusters 2–3 days
3 Add FAQs to your top 10 product pages 1 day
4 List the 10 third-party sources ChatGPT cites most; start outreach ongoing
4 Apply for ChatGPT product feeds if relevant; prep a clean feed 2–3 hours
Monthly Re-run the prompt list and compare 2 hours

This won't flip every answer in a month. Access fixes can show up within days. Content changes take weeks. Third-party mentions take months and compound.

FAQ

How long does it take to rank in ChatGPT?

It depends on the fix. OpenAI says robots.txt changes for its crawlers take about 24 hours to be picked up. New pages take weeks to be found and used, and third-party mentions build over months. The training path only updates when new models are trained.

Does ChatGPT use Google rankings?

Not directly, and OpenAI doesn't publish its ranking method. In practice, pages that are well indexed, clearly written and widely referenced tend to do well in both, so good SEO fundamentals help, but a top Google rank doesn't guarantee a ChatGPT mention.

Should I block GPTBot to protect my content?

Only if protecting your content matters more than being known. Blocking GPTBot keeps your pages out of future training but doesn't affect ChatGPT search, which uses OAI-SearchBot. Most D2C brands benefit from allowing both.

Can a small D2C brand rank in ChatGPT against big brands?

Yes, especially on specific questions. Big brands win broad prompts like "best shampoo", but a small brand with the clearest answer to "sulphate-free shampoo for curly hair in humid weather" has a real chance of being named.

Do ChatGPT ads help my organic visibility?

According to OpenAI, no. Ads appear separately and are clearly labelled, and OpenAI says they don't influence the answers. Treat ads and organic visibility as two separate budgets.
